Experiencing 'The Passion of the Joan of Arc' as my very first silent film experience was definitely something else. Far from my initial expectations of the silent era, the film already proved itself through its emotional core, remarkably driven by its haunting score, 'Voices of Light' by Richard Einhorn. The composition, segmented properly to resonate and convey the emotions of each scene, had a stand-out effect every time it was done, particularly 'The Jailers' with its string arrangements evoking a sense of weariness and dread.

Renee Falconetti's performance stood out as the film’s centerpiece to me. Her portrayal goes way beyond any spoken language, conveying the true horror and despair of Joan of Arc through her penetrating gaze. Falconetti's intensely dramatized manner and the expression in her eyes culminate in one of the most powerful acting displays I've encountered, especially by a female lead.

It portrayed Joan’s unwavering, impenetrable faith and eloquence under pressure, and a constant flurry of defying accusations of insanity by the church that condemns her for heresy. Her devotion and articulate defense of her beliefs offer a compelling insight into her sanctification as a saint, showing us the influence and strength of religion.

The film's technical aspects in its camerawork and pacing compliment the viewing as well. Super captivating from start to finish, it defies any notion of monotony or redundancy. Each scene, infused with tension and emotional depth, immerses the viewer in Joan’s spiritual and judicial struggle. The dynamic camerawork with the many oscillations, zoom-ins, placements, lighting, and stillness – reflects the director’s vision, emphasizing the narrative’s intensity.

The Passion of the Joan of Arc stands as a piece of cinematic history, etching its place in history as a silent film masterpiece. Its blend of powerful acting, score, and compelling storytelling goes way beyond the era's constraints, offering an experience that stays with you.
